Jamaat-Linked Lawyer Arrested in Cumilla with Foreign Pistol and Ammunition

Police have arrested Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Advocate KIM Masudul Haque, also known as Masum, from Cumilla with a foreign-made pistol, magazine, and ammunition.

He was detained on Wednesday night from his residence in the Tomchom Bridge area of Cumilla city. The matter was confirmed by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Cumilla EPZ Police Outpost, Md. Saiful Islam.

According to police sources, earlier on Thursday night, a young man named Ariful Islam (36) was arrested from the Dharmapur area of the city. Five rounds of ammunition and a knife were recovered from his possession. Based on information obtained during preliminary interrogation, police later conducted a raid at the residence of APP Masudul Haque, where a foreign pistol, a magazine, and bullets were recovered.

The arrested Masudul Haque is known as a Jamaat-backed lawyer. He is the younger brother of AKM Emdadul Haque, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Cumilla Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami. Meanwhile, the arrested Ariful Islam is a resident of Dharmapur area under Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila.

No statement could be obtained from any responsible leader of Cumilla Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami regarding the incident.

OC Md. Saiful Islam of the Cumilla EPZ Police Outpost said that legal proceedings are underway against both the arrested lawyer and the youth.

Regarding the matter, Public Prosecutor of the Cumilla Court, Advocate Kaimul Haque Rinku, said that he came to know about the issue through the police. He added that once the case documents are received from the police station, the Ministry of Law will be informed in writing. Following that, the ministry will decide on Masudul Haque’s role and responsibilities as an Assistant Public Prosecutor.
