A heartbreaking incident in Bagerhat has sparked grief and raised serious questions after a detained Chhatra League leader was denied parole, even as the bodies of his wife and infant child were brought to the gate of Jessore Central Jail for a final farewell.

About five years ago, Kaniz Subarna Swarnali married Chhatra League leader Jewel Hasan Saddam following a love relationship. The couple welcomed their only child, Nazim Hossain, just nine months ago. However, before the child’s birth, Saddam was arrested in connection with a political case and has remained in prison since then, depriving the infant of his father’s care and affection.

According to family members, Swarnali had been under severe mental stress and despair after repeated failures to secure her husband’s release from what they claim was a false case. Allegedly, overwhelmed by frustration, she first drowned her infant son and later took her own life.

On Friday, police recovered the bodies of the mother and child. After post-mortem examinations, the bodies were handed over to their relatives.

On Saturday afternoon, following a family decision, the bodies were taken to the gate of Jessore Central Jail so that Saddam could see his wife and child one last time. However, due to time constraints and administrative complications, he was not granted parole.

The tragic incident has deeply shaken the local community. Some residents have termed the deaths “mysterious” and are demanding an impartial investigation to determine whether it was truly a case of suicide or a planned premeditated killing.

Police officials said that one murder case and one unnatural death case have been filed in connection with the incident. Further legal action will be taken based on the post-mortem reports and the findings of the ongoing investigation.
