Bangladesh’s law and order situation has come under renewed scrutiny after the BNP government took office. According to Police Headquarters data, 934 murder cases were recorded across the country between May and July this year, averaging more than 300 cases per month or around 10 cases every day.
A total of 2,076 murder cases were filed nationwide during the first seven months of the year. Monthly figures stood at 287 in January, 250 in February, 317 in March, 288 in April, 310 in May, 326 in June and 298 in July.
The BNP government took office on February 17, with restoring law and order among its key priorities. However, concerns over killings, political violence and violence against women and children have continued. Recent police data also indicate an increase in some serious crimes during the government’s first six months.
Crime analysts say killings are being driven by several factors, including political conflicts, power struggles, drugs, illegal firearms and family disputes. They have also raised questions about the government’s ability to effectively control crime and strengthen law enforcement.
According to human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra, 134 people were killed in mob violence during the first seven months of the year. At least 77 people were also killed in political violence during the same period.
Police, however, say efforts are underway to bring those involved in crimes to justice and that operations against criminals are continuing.
With an average of around 10 murders being reported every day, the continuing violence has intensified questions over the BNP government’s effectiveness in maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
