Al Amin, 40, a local Youth League leader in Bhairab, Kishoreganj, was allegedly hacked to death by BNP supporters, according to his family and local residents. The attack took place around midnight on Sunday (August 23) in the Tinpotti area of Bhairab municipal town.
Al Amin was critically injured in the attack and was initially taken to a private hospital in the area. He was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 3:00 a.m.
Al Amin was the son of Jasim Uddin of Araibepari area in Bhairab. He was actively involved in Youth League politics and also ran a business establishment called Riverview Hotel in the town.
Family members said that after the political change on August 5, 2024, several cases were filed against Al Amin. He was arrested twice and spent time in jail before securing bail. Following the political transition, he had largely remained out of public view.
For several years, Al Amin had not been living at his ancestral home. He was residing in a rented house in the Ranibazar area with his wife and children.
According to family members and local residents, Al Amin was at his business establishment around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. At approximately 11:50 p.m., he left the hotel on his motorcycle for home. Shortly after entering the road leading to his residence, several people allegedly surrounded him and attacked him with sharp weapons.
He sustained multiple injuries to his head, while one of his leg tendons was reportedly severed, causing severe blood loss. Local residents rescued him and took him to a nearby private hospital before he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Several residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the road leading to Al Amin’s home is relatively deserted at night. They heard screams and arrived at the scene, where they allegedly saw several people fleeing. Al Amin was found lying on the road in a pool of blood, with severe injuries to his head and face.
His wife, Tania Khanam, said she last spoke to her husband at around 11:40 p.m. He told her that he was at the hotel and would return home within five minutes. He also asked her to prepare dinner. She said she had no idea who killed him or why he was targeted.
Bhairab Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahabur Rahman confirmed the death.
