The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced the deployment of over 18,000 police personnel across the capital to maintain law and order ahead of the founding anniversary of the activity-banned Awami League on June 23.
According to a police statement, extensive security measures have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents, sabotage, or unauthorized gatherings in the city. Law enforcers have already set up checkposts and pickets at more than 200 strategic points, including all major entry routes to Dhaka.
We have taken comprehensive security steps to safeguard public property and maintain peace, said a senior DMP official. Along with regular police units, specialized teams from the Detective Branch (DB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit will remain on high alert. Plainclothes officers will also carry out intelligence operations to intercept any sudden political processions.
The heightened vigilance comes amid concerns over potential clashes between the activists of the banned Awami League and opposition groups, including the National Citizen Party (NCP) and students of the Anti-Discrimination Movement.
To ensure a rapid response to emergencies, 15 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and four central control rooms have been established to monitor field-level operations across Dhaka.
