An elderly woman, identified as Firoza Begum, has died after being hit by a vehicle carrying BNP State Minister for Public Administration and Food Abdul Bari in Shibganj, Bogura. She died while undergoing treatment at TMSS Medical College Hospital on Friday (September 4).
The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on the Mokamtola-Joypurhat road in the Gopinathpur area of Shibganj upazila. Firoza Begum was a resident of Gopinathpur village under Kichak Union. Her husband was the late Nizam Uddin.
According to police and local sources, State Minister Abdul Bari and his family members were travelling from Dhaka towards Joypurhat. At Gopinathpur, the vehicle hit pedestrian Firoza Begum, leaving her seriously injured. The driver then lost control of the vehicle, which went off the road and ended up in a nearby field.
Local residents rescued Firoza Begum and took her to TMSS Medical College Hospital for treatment. She died there at around 11:45 a.m. while receiving treatment.
State Minister Abdul Bari and his wife also sustained minor injuries in the accident and received primary medical treatment, according to police.
Police said the vehicle was travelling at overspeed at the time of the accident. Local accounts have alleged that the vehicle may have been travelling at around 100 km/h, although the exact speed and circumstances of the crash have yet to be established through an official investigation.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bogura Sadar Police Station Ibrahim Ali said Firoza Begum’s body remains under police custody at the hospital.
