In the first ten months of this year, a total of 198 homicides were recorded in the capital, averaging about 20 killings per month, according to data released by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday. The figures also include incidents involving recovery of newborn bodies.

Meanwhile, in a special operation, the Detective Branch (DB) of DMP arrested three suspected criminals, seizing three foreign-made pistols, 60 rounds of ammunition, and a quantity of illegal drugs.

Speaking to reporters at his office, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, said that murders in Dhaka generally stem from domestic disputes, personal enmity, and local dominance conflicts. He noted that considering the city’s dense population and socioeconomic challenges, the number of homicide cases remains within what he described as a “manageable level.” He added that most recent murder cases have been solved and the perpetrators brought under the law.

Regarding the murder of Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria in Pallabi, he said police are conducting a detailed investigation. One suspect has already been arrested, while efforts are underway to catch the other two, which will help clarify the motive.

Three Arrested With Illegal Weapons and Drugs

The Detective Branch also reported arresting three individuals identified as Jahangir Alam Titu, Abdur Razzak Shanu, and Md. Mamun during an operation targeting illegal arms and drug networks in Dhaka. The information was revealed during a press briefing at the DMP Media Center on Tuesday morning.

According to Amir Khasru, Deputy Commissioner of DB Ramna Division, a team carried out a raid in the New Shyampur area based on confidential intelligence. Officers recovered three foreign pistols, three magazines, 60 rounds of ammunition, 800 yaba tablets, and 8.5 kilograms of cannabis.

He stated that the suspects are known locally as dangerous criminals and drug dealers. They allegedly kept the firearms to maintain control over drug-selling zones and conduct other criminal activities. All three have multiple previous cases filed under arms and narcotics laws. Two new cases have been registered at Kadamtali Police Station in connection with the arrests.
