After more than 22 years, Bangladesh have finally broken their drought against India. The last time Bangladesh beat India in an official match was in the semifinal of the SAFF Championship back in January 2003. This long wait ended thanks to the efforts of players like Hamza Chowdhury and Shamit Som, as Bangladesh claimed a memorable win.

Bangladesh defeated India 1–0 in the World Cup qualifier. Midfielder Sheikh Morsalin, returning from injury, scored the decisive goal. His strike in the 11th minute at the Dhaka National Stadium became the match winner—making the victory historic, as Bangladesh had not beaten India in any recognized match since 2003.

Bangladesh struggled early to create attacking chances, while India repeatedly entered the penalty area but failed to score.

Morsalin, back in the starting lineup, made an immediate impact. He connected with a low cross from Rakib on the left and slotted the ball home, sending the crowd into celebration.

In the 20th minute, a mistake by goalkeeper Mitul almost cost Bangladesh a goal, but Hamza Chowdhury made a crucial headed clearance to save the team.

Tensions flared in the 34th minute when Topu Barman and India’s Vikram clashed, leading to a scuffle between players of both sides. The referee calmed the situation and booked both players.

Despite several chances from both teams, the first half ended without further goals.

India started the second half strongly and created two promising chances but couldn’t convert. They continued to press with a sharper attacking rhythm.

In the 78th minute, Topu Barman tried a long-range shot, but it lacked power and was saved by the Indian goalkeeper.

At the 83rd minute, the ball struck the back of an Indian defender’s hand inside the box. Bangladeshi players appealed for a penalty, but the referee waved play on.

Watching from the stands were interim government sports adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and cultural adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki.
