Law enforcement and intelligence agencies in Bangladesh have stepped up security measures following an email threat targeting the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The threat was reportedly sent on Wednesday night, August 19, in the name of an extremist organisation. Following the incident, officials from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police\u2019s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit and Police Headquarters held a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen to review the security situation and discuss necessary measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting took place at the Chinese Embassy in Baridhara on Thursday, August 20, between 10:00 and 10:30am. A police delegation led by CTTC Joint Commissioner Munshi Shahabuddin attended the meeting with Ambassador Yao Wen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials said Additional Deputy Commissioner Mahmud of the LIC branch of Police Headquarters and at least 10 Chinese nationals working on various projects in Bangladesh were also present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to intelligence and CTTC sources, the embassy authorities informed Police Headquarters and the CTTC about the threat after receiving the email. Police officials subsequently visited the embassy to discuss the security situation and possible precautionary measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sources also reported that there was some dissatisfaction and a heated exchange between embassy officials and police over arrangements to strengthen security around the diplomatic mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the meeting at the Chinese Embassy, CTTC officials also met with Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi at the Japanese Embassy in Baridhara. The meeting was held from 10:40am to 11:30am on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The security reviews come amid growing concern over a series of bomb-like objects found in Dhaka and other parts of the country in recent weeks. Police bomb disposal units have neutralised several such objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In one recent incident, police arrested an individual in the Demra area of Dhaka after allegedly recovering two bomb-like devices from his possession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
